Before beginning to calculate the area of 2D shapes, learners worked with their partner and used cubes to construct shapes with specified lengths for each side. This visual activity helped learners to understand the initial process of calculating cm2 by counting squares.
After this activity, we had a try at an interactive Area Builder game on the Promethium Board which gave pupils the opportunity to construct 2D shapes with a given area. Once each design was complete, pupils voted to see if the shape possessed the correct area or not.
These hands on activities really solidified our initial understanding of Area.
